Radical Changes to NAGPRA: Will Museums, Collectors and the Art Trade Survive?

The national news is full of stories about museums closing down Native American galleries and calls from tribes for rapid repatriation of objects. What do the 2024 changes to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) mean for New Mexico’s museums, art galleries, and our many thousands of private collectors of Native American art? How does this relate to other laws cutting off U.S. access to international art? What do advisers need to know about how dramatic changes to U.S. law affect clients with art interests during life and as part of estate planning?

Kate Fitz Gibbon, a nationally known specialist in heritage law (and local estate attorney) will talk about how 2024’s changes to NAGPRA and pending implementation of the STOP Act that will block exports of Native art will impact Southwest museums, public education, clients and community.
